Why a first birthday is really for the grown-ups
Pick one color story and one shape, and stop. A bowl of strawberries on a gingham cloth is a theme. A plush lion under a monstera leaf is a theme. Everything else is optional.
A one-year-old has a four-minute attention span and a nap that moves for nobody. The realistic shape of a first birthday party at home:
- Two hours, between naps. Put the start and end time on the invitation, so the party ends before the meltdown does.
- Twelve to twenty guests. Grandparents, close friends, a few families with small children.
- One photo corner. A chair in front of your biggest window, with the one decoration that says the theme. Every photo gets taken there, in daylight, before cake.
- A cake the baby can wreck. A small smash cake for the baby and a plain sheet cake for the adults.
The first birthday party ideas below all fit that shape: about an hour to set up, about a hundred dollars to do well.
Berry First: a bright berry party in the strawberry patch
Pink gingham, fresh strawberries and a bunny in a strawberry hat. The theme for a summer birthday in the yard.
- Decor: a gingham tablecloth, two bowls of real strawberries as the centerpieces, a string of bunting.
- Cake: a small white smash cake with sliced strawberries on top, and a strawberry sheet cake for everyone else.
- Food: strawberry and cream-cheese finger sandwiches, fruit skewers, lemonade in a jug.
- Photos: the baby on the gingham with a strawberry in each hand. Red against pink is the most forgiving color pairing a phone camera knows.
The Berry First invitationwas drawn for exactly this party. Wording to copy: “Mila is turning one. Join us in the strawberry patch on Saturday, May 16, 2 to 4 p.m., at 14 Rowan Street. Text Dana by May 9: 555-0184.” If you’d rather the strawberries without the bunny, Berry Special is the picnic-table version.
Born to Be Wild: the wild one safari theme
“Wild one” is the most-searched first birthday theme in America, and the pun does the decorating. A lion, a giraffe and an elephant, pastel balloons, a few big leaves.
- Decor:monstera or palm leaves from the grocery store’s flower section, laid down the middle of the table. One cluster of pastel balloons. A plush lion on the photo chair.
- Cake:plain buttercream with a wooden “one” topper or a small toy animal on top.
- Food: animal crackers, a veggie tray arranged by color, sliders for the adults.
- Photos: baby on the chair with the lion, leaves behind, before the balloons sag.
The Born to Be Wild invitationhas all three animals. Wording to copy: “Our wild one is turning one. Come celebrate Theo on Sunday, August 9, 1 to 3 p.m., at 22 Maple Court. Reply to Sam by August 2.”
Flutter and Twirl: a fairy party in soft light
Fairy wings in pink and lilac. This theme is about light more than things: fairy lights and a length of tulle do almost all of it.
- Decor: pink or lilac tulle swagged along the front of the table, warm fairy lights woven through it, a few paper butterflies pinned behind the photo chair.
- Cake: cupcakes with pale pink frosting and paper wing toppers. Cupcakes are kinder to a room with toddlers in it.
- Food: a pink-and-white table: raspberry yogurt cups, marshmallows, pink lemonade, cucumber sandwiches.
- Photos: window light, fairy lights on, flash off.
The Flutter and Twirl invitation carries the wings and the glow. Wording to copy: “A little fairy is turning one. Join us for Ada’s first birthday on Saturday, April 18, 2 to 4 p.m., at 9 Linden Court. Text Priya by April 11: 555-0132.”
Bear Hug: a cuddly bear and woodland theme
Pressed roses, old letters and a well-loved teddy. The keepsake theme, for photos that look found in a box thirty years from now.
- Decor:a cream or gray linen cloth, dried flowers in jars, and the baby’s own teddy on the photo chair.
- Cake:a naked cake with berries, or a round cake with a bear’s face piped in two colors of buttercream.
- Food: warm things: mini quiches, a cheese board, honey cake, apple cider.
- Photos:baby and teddy together, close up. Neutral colors make the baby’s face the brightest thing in the frame.
The Bear Hug invitationis the one with the teddy and the letters. Wording to copy: “Noah is turning one. Come for cake and a cuddle on Sunday, October 25, 2 to 4 p.m., at 31 Birch Lane. Reply to Hannah by October 18.”
Par-tea: the low-effort tea party for grown-ups
Watercolor blues, a runaway bunny and a teacup. Be honest about who this one is for: grandparents and great-aunts who want a proper cup of tea, with a baby to pass around.
- Decor: every cup and saucer you own, mismatched on purpose, a blue or white cloth, one pot of flowers.
- Cake: a lemon loaf cut into fingers for the table, and one small cupcake with a candle for the baby.
- Food: scones with jam, crustless sandwiches in triangles, shortbread. Two pots of tea, one caffeine-free.
- Photos: the baby in a high chair at the table, a teacup in front, a grandparent beside.
The Par-tea invitationwas drawn with the pot warming. Wording to copy: “You are invited to tea for Rosie’s first birthday. Sunday, March 8, 3 to 5 p.m., at 4 Orchard Row. Reply to Claire by March 1: 555-0177.”
Let’s Party: the colorful crowd-pleasing classic
Pastel balloons around a frosted cake with the candles lit. When you can’t decide, this is the theme: cheapest, most forgiving of spills, right for a boy or a girl in any season.
- Decor: three clusters of pastel balloons taped to the wall at different heights, and a paper tablecloth you can roll up afterwards.
- Cake: a store-bought sheet cake with pastel frosting and one big candle, plus a small smash cake in the same colors.
- Food: pizza, a fruit platter, juice boxes for the toddlers, a cooler for the adults. Nothing needs a fork.
- Photos: the balloons are the backdrop. Group photo first, while everyone is clean, then the smash cake.
The Let’s Party invitationhas the balloons and the lit candles. Wording to copy: “Eli is turning one! Join us for pizza and cake on Saturday, June 6, 1 to 3 p.m., at 18 Willow Street. Text Jordan by May 30: 555-0199.”
