How do you ask your friends to be your bridesmaids?

Somewhere between the first phone calls and the first venue visit the next question arrives: how do you ask your friends to be your bridesmaids? Here is when to ask, who to ask first, what to write in a bridesmaid card, and how to ask the friend three time zones away.

Ask each friend one at a time, in the first month or two after the engagement, with a card and a real conversation. The card is the part she keeps. The conversation is the part she remembers. A $40 proposal box adds nothing to either.

When to ask your bridesmaids

Within the first two months of being engaged, and no later than six to nine months before the wedding. That holds whether the wedding is next summer or the one after.

Ask at six months and you are asking someone to clear a calendar she has already filled, with dress shopping, the shower and the bachelorette still to plan.

Three things move that window:

  • Not on engagement day. The day is yours. Ask a week or two later, when the ask can have its own moment.
  • A list you are still unsure about. Wait. Asking late is awkward for a week. Un-asking is awkward for a lifetime. If two names are a maybe, ask the certain ones first.
  • A short engagement. Ask the week you set the date. With four months to go, every week counts.

Who to ask first, and how to choose your maid of honor

Ask your maid of honor first, alone, before anyone else hears. Then ask the rest within the same week, in no particular order, so nobody finds out from the group chat that she was asked third.

Choosing the maid of honor comes down to one question: who would you call at 2 a.m. the night before? Not the friend you have known longest, and not the one who would be hurt to be passed over. The one who will do the work and want to.

The bridesmaid proposal wording for a maid of honor names the job: “I want you next to me, and I want you to be the one I call when it all goes sideways.” For the bridesmaids it names the friendship, and nothing else. No duties on the card. Those come later, in a conversation, once she has said yes.

What to write on a bridesmaid card or in a message

Short. The note that works is three sentences: why her, what you are asking, and that there is no wrong answer. The dress color, the dates and the budget belong in a later conversation. A card with a to-do list reads like a job offer.

The line that matters is the first one, and it is always a specific memory. “You held my hair in that bathroom in Austin” beats “you have always been there for me”, because only she knows about Austin.

Wording examples: in person, by text, on the card, and long distance

Change the names and the memories.

  • The short one, for a card.“Julia, you were there for the first date and the first heartbreak. I’d like you there for this too. Will you be my bridesmaid?”
  • For your partner’s sister.“I’m marrying your brother, and I would like to gain a sister properly. Will you be my bridesmaid?”
  • The one-line text that goes with a picture of the card.“Read it, then call me.” That is the whole message. The card does the asking, and she will call.
  • The phone script, for the friend you can’t sit down with.“I have something to ask and I wanted to ask it out loud. Would you be my bridesmaid? And before you answer, you can say no, and we are fine either way.”

For the maid of honor, add one sentence after the ask: “And I want you to be the one running it.” She should hear the job, not discover it.

How to ask friends who live far away

Send the card tonight by message, then call her. Never the card alone, and never the call alone.

The picture of the card does the asking. It lands in her chat, she reads it twice, and then the phone rings and it is you.

  • Time it to her evening, not yours.A card that lands during her 9 a.m. meeting gets a heart emoji and a “call you later”.
  • If you want paper on her doorstep, print it there. Send the print-ready file to a print shop in her town and have them hold it for pickup. Two days instead of two weeks. My print-at-home guide covers paper and settings if you print one yourself first.

Both files arrive the moment you pay, a PNG for sending and a print-ready PDF, so the friend in your city and the friend in Lisbon get the same card on the same night.

Bridesmaid proposal ideas that don’t need a gift box

The box is fine if you love giving gifts. It is not what makes the ask feel personal, and no one has ever been upset to be asked over coffee. What works without one:

  • A card and a coffee. You hand it over, she reads it, you talk. The memory is of your face.
  • A card and a call. The long-distance version above. The card is the keepsake and the call is the moment.
  • A card and one small thing she will use.Earrings for the day, or the book you keep telling her to read. Under $20 and chosen for her. A box of six things chosen for “bridesmaids” in general is chosen for nobody.
  • A dinner for all of them at once. Only after each has been asked privately. The dinner celebrates the yes. Nobody should hear the question for the first time in front of five other people.

A friend being asked to spend money and weekends on your wedding deserves a question, not a performance.

How to handle a no, a scheduling clash, or a change later

Some will say no. That is why the ask ends with “you can say no”. A new baby, a job across the country, or money she does not want to talk about are all reasons, and you will not always be told which.

  • When she says no.“Thank you for telling me. I would still love you there as a guest, and nothing changes between us.” Don’t fill her place the same week.
  • When she says yes but can’t make the shower or the bachelorette. Say it is fine, and mean it. Bridesmaid is a role on the day, not an attendance record.
  • When a bridesmaid has to step back later.Let her. If you need the numbers, ask the friend who was the maybe, and tell her the truth: “A spot opened up, and I would love it to be you.”
  • When it is you making the change. A smaller guest list, a wedding that moves abroad. Tell them early and in person, never by group text.

Printing, sending, and what to do after they say yes

My bridesmaid card is Pink Champagne, $8: a ring, a champagne bucket and a pair of bells doodled in red ink on pale pink, with “Dear” and “Will you be my bridesmaid?” drawn into the card in a flowing script. Her name goes in red script at the top, and the verse in the middle is yours to rewrite. Type her name and watch it appear on the preview, pay once, and both files are in your inbox before you have finished your coffee. If you spell her middle name wrong, one free revision fixes it. No account, no design software.

The verse that comes with the card reads “Side by side or miles apart, sisters are always close to the heart”, with “I found my man, but I need my girl” beneath it. Keep it, or type your own into the same lines:

  • For a childhood friend:“From sleepovers to this, you have been there for all of it.”
  • For your partner’s sister:“I’m marrying your brother, and I’m gaining a sister.”

The “girl” that ends the second verse can be a “sister” if that is who she is. The preview tells you in a second whether a longer word fits, because what you see is exactly what you print. The question itself is fixed, so Pink Champagne always asks “bridesmaid”, never “maid of honor”. For a maid of honor version, ask me to draw a design and I will.

The PNG goes in a message. The PDF prints at home on cardstock or at any print shop, at the card’s real size, 5 by 7 inches. My digital invitations guide has the longer reasoning.

After the yeses: a thank you by message that night, the conversation about dates and dresses within the month, and a thank you card after the wedding, which your bridesmaids will keep longer than the dress. Everything else on the weddings page is for later.

Questions people ask

How far in advance should I ask someone to be my bridesmaid?

Within the first month or two of being engaged, and at least six to nine months before the wedding. With a short engagement, the week you set the date.

What is a short text I can send if I want to keep the ask casual?

The picture of the card with one line: “Read it, then call me.”

How should I ask a friend who lives in another city or country to be a bridesmaid?

Send the card by message in her evening, then call her the same night.

How do I ask someone to be my maid of honor differently from other bridesmaids?

First, alone, and with the job named in one sentence: “I want you to be the one running it.” The bridesmaids get the friendship line only.

What should I write in a bridesmaid card if I want it to be sentimental but not long?

One specific memory, the ask, and permission to say no. “You were there for the first heartbreak. I’d like you there for this. Will you be my bridesmaid?”

What do I do if a friend says no or can’t commit to being a bridesmaid?

Thank her, tell her nothing changes, and invite her as a guest. Don’t fill the spot the same week, and don’t ask why unless she tells you.
